Karate Classes – Karate is a word mostly everyone has heard of but very few truly understand what it means. Karate in Okinawan means “empty hand” and it refers to systems of unarmed self-defence and combat.
The key word here is the plural form of the word system. In other words, there are scores upon scores of different karate styles. Each one may have its methodology of teaching but all karate classes in the present day seem to follow a number of similar approaches.

Karate classes are sometimes a mix of modern and traditional methods of teaching. The traditional method refers to the common ways karate was taught prior to 1970. Namely, the karate classes involve emphasis on respect, discipline, and traditional kata and kumite (sparring) practice.
The more modern approach of karate adds point sparring, kickboxing, and modern self-defence techniques for men and women. While these approaches are different, they both have value. That is why investing time learning both modern and traditional karate is a wise move.
The teaching methods of a karate class will vary from instructor to instructor. In general, the practice of traditional forms, self-defence techniques, and one-step sparring are involved. Mostly all karate classes are designed to teach at the skill level of the individual student.
Those that are beginners need not worry about the class being too difficult. Instructors tailor the programs so beginners can easily launch their lessons without having to be in any particular shape or athletic ability. And for those that are advanced practitioners the classes can be modified to meet your expectations as well. Ultimately, it is the student that dictates the intensity level as instructors want the experience to be fun and enjoyable.
Karate classes are not boot camps (Although there are some really excellent boot camps based on karate training) and no one will be worked to the point of exhaustion. That is not what karate is about. It is an enjoyable learning experience in the form of physical exercise. This makes it perfect for all manner of students.
The average karate class runs 60 to 90 minutes. Some students opt to take more than one class per evening depending upon how the classes are taught. For example, some karate classes can be built around belt test requirements, others could centre on weapons training, still others will deal with sparring, and various other aspects of training.
And, of course, there is special karate classes designed for children. Obviously, children will have different needs than adults and their needs will be catered to in classes designed for them. This allows their experience to be more rewarding and something they will continue through the rest of their lives.
Karate classes have been popular for hundreds of years for a good reason: people simple enjoy the uniqueness of a karate class. That is why it never loses its appeal and why it always remains a great activity to take part in.
